Reported for Montana in the Flora of North America (2006) though not currently accepted as occurring in the state by the MTNHP. Additionally, 4 Montana specimens at MONTU annotated to this species by Semple appear to be better referred to other species (2 to Symphyotrichum boreale, 1 to S. eatonii and 1 to S. lanceolatum) based in part on the lack of the key character for the species (leafy rosettes along the rhizomes) and differences in habitat.
