General Description
Stems 8–75 cm, clustered on the caudex. Leaves mainly cauline 2–15 cm long; blades deeply pinnately lobed into narrowly oblong, serrate segments 5–60 mm long. Inflorescence densely flowered, 3–20 cm long; bracts lanceolate, ciliate. Flowers: calyx 6–13 mm long, 5-lobed, the lobes 4–8 mm long, the closest to the galea shorter; corolla yellow or purplish, 12–26 mm long; galea 4–12 mm long, arched; beak tip small or lacking. Capsule 4–13 mm long (Lesica 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).

We have varieties bracteosa, paysoniana (Pennell) Cronquist and canbyi (A.Gray) Cronquist.
