General Description
Taprooted perennial, spreading by horizontal roots. Stems erect, often unbranched 25–80 cm. Herbage tomentose; upper leaf surfaces becoming glabrate. Leaves winged-petiolate; blade oblanceolate to oblong, 4–25 cm long, deeply pinnately lobed to subentire. Inflorescence 1 to 2 heads at the stem tips; peduncles 5–25 mm long. Involucres broadly campanulate, 2–3 cm high, sparsely arachnoid; phyllaries imbricate in 7 to 12 series, green; outer lanceolate with a darkened, resinous keel-tip; inner linear; spines 2–4 mm long, spreading.
