Fuzzy-tongue Penstemon - Penstemon eriantherus
General Description
Stems ascending to erect, 5–30 cm. Herbage puberulent. Basal leaf blades oblanceolate to linear-oblanceolate, usually serrate, 2–6 cm long. Stem leaves lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, 2–6 cm long. Inflorescence crowded, of 2 to 6 glandular-villous verticillasters. Flowers: calyx 6–12 mm long; sepals lanceolate, not scarious; corolla lavender to pinkish with purple lines, yellow-bearded within, 15–30 mm long, upper portion of tube expanded; anthers glabrous, opening across their full length; staminode long-hairy. Diagnostic Characteristics
Variety redactus and variety eriantherus occur in Montana, though the distinction between the two varieties is weak.
