General Description
Stems erect 1–2 m with short axillary shoots and 1 to 3 spines per node. Leaves simple, short-petiolate, obovate, 15–50 mm long with spiny margins. Flowers with sepals to 8 mm long. Fruits red or bluish, ellipsoid, ca. 1cm long (

Range Comments
Escaped from cultivation, introduced to much of northern U.S. and adjacent Canada; native to Europe (Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).
