General Description
Rhizomatous perennial. Stems ascending, simple or branched, 10–50 cm. Herbage glabrous. Leaves sessile, 2–6 cm long, lanceolate, crenate, the upper clasping. Inflorescence glabrous to sparsely glandular-pubescent, axillary racemes; pedicels 3–7 mm long. Flowers: calyx 2–3 mm long; corolla blue, 3–5 mm across; style 2–3 mm long. Capsule obovoid, 2–4 mm long, glabrous, barely notched (Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).

Lesica (2012) treats V. catenata as a distinct species.
