General Description
Biennial or short-lived perennial. Stems erect, often branched, 40–80 cm. Herbage hirsute. Leaf blades lanceolate, 3–15 cm long, serrate. Heads radiate; phyllaries lanceolate, hirsute, 1–2 cm long; receptacle hemispheric, 8–12 mm high. Rays 8 to 16, hirsute; ligules 15–35 mm long. Disk corollas purple, 3–4 mm long, ca. as long as the scales. Achenes 1.5–3 mm long (Lesica 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).
