Cool season, rhizomatous, perennial aquatic. Stems 40–70 cm. Leaves: blades 1–3 mm wide, mostly flat and lax to ascending; sheaths with overlapping margins; ligule membranous. Inflorescence an open panicle 6–12 cm long. Spikelets 4–7 mm long, with 4 to 7 florets; glumes similar to lemmas.
