General Description
Perennial bunchgrass sometimes with short rhizomes (i.e., widely diverging tillers). Stems 40–70 cm tall, erect, sheaths glabrous to more commonly short hairy or scabrous. Leaves: blades 2–3.5 mm wide, ligules 0.5–2 mm long. Inflorescence an open panicle, often nodding, 5–11 cm long. Spikelets 6–9 mm long. Lemmas 3–6 mm long, hairless or scabrous (Lavin in Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).
