General Description
Perennial Stems 20–80 cm. Leaves: blades 1–2 mm wide, ligules 3–8 mm long. Inflorescence a contracted panicle 5–25 cm long, the branches appressed to the main rachis. Spikelets 4–7 mm long, glumes pale green but distally purplish-colored. Lemmas 2–3 mm long (Lavin in Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).

Range Comments
Throughout all of western North America and sporadically in the eastern U.S. (Appalachia) (Lavin in Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).
