Diagnostic Characteristics
Variety borealis can be distinguished by the following characters: sepals 1-veined, scarious margins broad; heads of achenes 4-9 mm; outer face of achene narrowly elliptic or rectangular.(Whittemore, 1997, Fl. North America, Vol. 3).

Range Comments
AB to SK south to CA, AZ, UT and WY (Kartesz 2009).

Habitat
Flats and marshes, often in sagebrush; 600-1500 m (Whittemore, 1997).
