General Description
Stems prostrate to erect, 10–50 cm. Leaf blades fleshy, pale green and glabrous above, white-farinose beneath, lanceolate to ovate, 1–4 cm long with sinuate margins. Inflorescence glomerules, 1–2 mm diameter, in bracteate, axillary and terminal spikes. Flowers: calyx mostly 5-parted, segments green, nearly distinct, ca. 0.6 mm long; stamen 1. Seed flattened-orbicular, punctate, 0.6–1.1 mm, vertical and horizontal. Drying, often saline mud around ponds, lakes, streams, roadsides; plains, valleys, montane (Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).

Diagnostic Characteristics
Differs from the typical variety by the following traits: Inflorescences with leaflike bracts throughout; leaf blade apices acute; vertical seeds 0.9-1.1 mm (Welsh, 2003, Fl. North America, Vol. 4).

Range Comments
In MT across most of state except southeastern area; AK to QC south to CA, TX, KY, VA (Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).
