Diagnostic Characteristics
Montana has two varieties of
Chenopodium capitatum (Lesica 2022; Clemants and Mosyakin
in Flora of North America [FNA] 2003):
Variety capitatum, possibly exotic
-In fruit the glomerules are reddish, 6-10mm broad.
-Leaf margins strongly toothed (dentate).
-Leaf blades are truncate to cordate at their base.
Variety parvicapitatum, native
-In fruit the glomerules are usually green (occasionally red), 5mm or less broad.
-Leaf margins entire to somewhat toothed (crenate).
-Leaf blades are cuneate to truncate at their base.
Range Comments
Plants are found in the Canadian provinces of AB, BC, MB, NB, NWT, NS, OM, QC, SK, YK.
Plants are found in the United States of America in AK, AZ, CA, CO, CT, ID, IL, ID, IA, ME, MA, MI, MN, MO, MT, NV, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, SD, UT, VT, WA, WI, and WY (Clemants and Mosyakin in FNA 2003). Chenopodium captitatum var. capitatum may be introduced to North America (Lesica et al. 2022) and is introduced into Eurasia and other places (Clemants and Mosyakin in FNA 2003).

Habitat
In North America plants occur in moist to dry soil, sandy or grassy meadows, thickets, open woods, old fields of clearings in forest (Clemants and Mosyakin in FNA 2003).
