Cirsium foliosum is not documented in Montana (MTNHP Status Review in 2017). Cirsium foliosum was included in the Flora of Montana (Booth 1966) which was the basis for its report in the Vascular Plants of Montana (Dorn 1984). The name of Cirsium foliosum was misapplied to many plants in the western U.S. (Keil in Flora of North America 2006). Many specimens have been annotated to Cirsium scariosum which is a highly variable (polymorphic) species (Keil in Flora of North America 2006). This includes herbarium specimens in Montana. A conservation status rank is not applicable (SNA) because this plant is not known to occur in Montana.

Range Comments

In the Yukon, Northwest Territories, British Columbia, and Alberta provinces of Canada and in the mountains of Wyoming, U.S. (Keil in FNA 2006).
