General Description
In areas where Centaurea stoebe ssp. micranthos and Centaurea diffusa co-occur, they readily hybridize (FNA 2006; Parkinson et al. 2011). These fertile hybrids have been named Centaurea xpsammogena G. Gayer. Characteristics of the hybrids are variable, except for the cypselae (fruit) which always bears a pappus and the flower heads are always conspicuously radiant (composed of ray florets). Flowers are purple or white. Bracts have a dark tip similar to C. stoebe and long bristles on the margins similar to C. diffusa.
