Caloplaca approximata and Caloplaca cf. approximata specimens collected in North America may refer to other species (McCune 2017). Specimens collected in the US (Montana, South Dakota, and Utah), Greenland, and nordic counties that have been attributed Caloplaca approximata were found to differ in spore size and dimensions (McCune 2017).
