State Rank Reason (see State Rank above)
Bryoria vrangiana (Gyelnik) Brodo & D. Hawksworth is known to occur in Europe (Egan 1987; Thomson 1984) and has been reported to occur in Montana (Brodo & Hawksworth 1977; DeBolt & McCune 1993). The cumulative checklist for lichen-forming, lichenicolous, and allied fungi of the continental United States and Canada, version 24 accepts Bryoria vrangiana as a synonym to Bryoria fuscescens (Esslinger 2021). Collections made in Glacier National Park during the 1970s to 1980s were assigned to Bryoria vrangiana, which exhibit some different characteristics (Consortium of Lichen Herbaria, accessed October 20, 2025; DeBolt & McCune 1993). The name of Bryoria cf. vrangiana serves as a placeholder for populations in our region that are described as B. vrangiana using the publication by Brodo and Hawksworth (1977), even though these collections do not appear to belong to thiss species (McCune et al. 2014). However, no other name is available for these collections (McCune et al. 2014). Therefore, the conservation status rank for Bryoria cf. vrangiana in Montana is unrankable (SU).
