General Description
A rather large, robust, short-winged grasshopper. Color is dark brownish dorsally, pale on face and ventrally. Wings (tegmina) are broad, but short and tapering to a point and shorter than pronotum (Hebard 1928, Helfer 1971, and Vickery and Kevan 1985).
Phenology
Specimens collected, 1905, early July to early September (Hebard 1928).
Diagnostic Characteristics
Body length for males 16.9-22.3 mm, females 27.9-29.4 mm. Hind femur has two broad transverse oblique blackish bands that cross the dorsal surface. Femur interior ventral surfaces are brilliant pink, as are the hind tibiae (Vickery and Kevan 1985).

Range Comments
Seems to be confined to southern Montana, with confirmed reports for 3 counties (Vickery and Kevan 1985, Scott 2010). Hebard (1928) reports “Known only from Livingston, MT.”

Habitat
Collected at 5000 feet, on ground with scanty vegetation “with tufts of a peculiar wooly plant...its discovery indicating that its distribution is probably not extensive and… extremely local, limited to small areas where…a certain type of vegetation is developed.” (Hebard 1928).
