Food Habits
During spring and summer feeds on green vegetation: grasses, sedges and forbs. From late summer on: roots, tubers, fruits, seeds. May use insects.

Ecology
Populations fluctuate widely. More fossorial than Microtus pennsylvanicus. Highly social. Tolerant of conspecifics. Many predators, high mortality rate and high reproduction rate.

Reproductive Characteristics
May form monogamous pair. Parents cooperate in raising young. Bimodal reproduction spring and fall in warmer areas. Variable. Possibly unimodal in northern ranges. Induced ovulation. Three weeks gestation. Born in globular nest of dried grass, below and above ground.
