The Prothonotary Warbler breeds throughout most of the southeastern U.S. but is local and scattered throughout the northern states and is largely absent from New England and the Appalachian Mountains (Petit 1999). In Montana, the Prothonotary Warbler has a single spring record over the past decade (Montana Bird Distribution Committee 2012).
