General Description
Sexes similar in plumage, but females slightly larger and heavier. Species have two color morphs. Adult light morph has brown back, cinnamon or chestnut barring below, and whitish throat. Tail black with prominent whitish band across the middle; a less visible, narrower white band near base of tail; and a narrow white band along the edge; wing with prominent blackish band along trailing edge.

Migration
Birds passing through MT presumably breed in central Canada.

Habitat
Nests in continuous deciduous or mixed-deciduous forests, near water and openings. Forages near small openings in the canopy.

Food Habits
Species generalized predator. Diet consists of amphibians, insects, mammals, and juvenile birds.

Reproductive Characteristics
Single brooded species with two to three eggs per brood. Incubation period 28 to 32 days. Young able to fly 35 days after hatch.
