Senecio integerrimus variety scribneri is endemic to Montana where populations are rare to uncommon in the central and eastern portions of the state. Plants are found in grassland and sage steppe habitats, often where land is used for agriculture and ranching. Observation data reported from 2000 to 2024 predominantly comes from 2 counties (Phillips and Valley). Whereas, data reported for 14 other counties is very old, 1979 to 1883. Thus, the statewide status of Senecio integerrimus var. scribneri populations and habitat conditions is largely unknown.

Surveys and monitoring that bring forth current information on presence/absence, population counts and viability, habitat conditions, and potential threats is greatly needed. Surveys on lands modelled as predicted suitable habitat are also greatly needed to better understand its distribution in Montana.

General Description
Distinguished from other varieties by the combination of more linear-lanceolate leaves, black-tipped phyllaries, and fewer (often 3-6) and larger heads.

MT into southern SK. Also reported for SD and NE from collections at the Rocky Mountain Herbarium; the identification of these specimens should be verified.

Habitat
Montana records are mostly in sagebrush shrublands and grasslands, usually with clay soils (MTNHP Point Observation Database, 2025).

The following animal species have been reported as pollinators of this plant species or its genus where their geographic ranges overlap: Bombus bifarius, Bombus flavifrons, Bombus frigidus, Bombus huntii, Bombus melanopygus, Bombus mixtus, Bombus sylvicola, Bombus occidentalis, Bombus insularis, Bombus suckleyi, Bombus flavidus, and Bombus kirbiellus (Schmitt 1980, Thorp et al. 1983, Mayer et al. 2000, Wilson et al. 2010, Pyke et al. 2012, Koch et al. 2012, Williams et al. 2014).


Threats or Limiting Factors
Reported threats for Scribner's Ragwort include habitat modification from agricultural and ranching practices and competition from invasive, noxious, and/or non-native plant species. Data that quantifies impacts is not available.

Climate change may also pose a potential low risk to state's populations. The MTNHP conducted a species-level assessment using the Climate Change Vulnerability Index (CCVI) in 2021, which resulted in an Less Vulnerable rating to climate change. Climate change including increased ambient temperatures, decreased snowpacks, and increased frequencies and severities of drought could have negative impacts on this species; however, field-based data on the timing and magnitude from climate change is not available.
