General Description
Stems erect, 7–40 cm with glabrous to hirsute foliage. Basal leaf blades 1–10 cm long, lanceolate to narrowly ovate with entire margins. Flowers with petals 4–12 mm long, twice as long as the glabrous to hirsute sepals. Achenes glabrous to sparsely hairy, ca. 2 mm long with a straight or bent beak 1 mm long; heads hemispheric, 4–6 mm high (Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).

Montana has varities alismifolius, alismellus Gray, and davisii Benson.

Ecology
POLLINATORS
The following animal species have been reported as pollinators of this plant species or its genus where their geographic ranges overlap: Bombus auricomus, Bombus bifarius, Bombus nevadensis, and Bombus bimaculatus (Macior 1968, Thorp et al. 1983).
