Similar to the typical variety but the plants perennial (v. annual or biennial), the caudex well-developed and often branching, and stemless or nearly so (excluding the inflorescence stalk) (adopted from Welsh et al., 1993, A Utah Flora).
ID and MT south to OR and CA, east to CO (Kartesz 2009).
