An Amphipod - Hyalella azteca
General Description
The genus Hyalella is in desperate need of revision. H. azteca is in actuality a complex of at least six species, probably more (Gonzalez and Watling 2002) and it may be that the species is limited to Vera Cruz, Mexico. Several Hyalella species have been described in the US (Baldinger et al. 2000). At this time due to the current confusion surrounding the genus, all determinations of epigean Hyalella should be left at genus level (Rogers 2005). Listed as H. "azteca" by McLaughlin et al. (2005).
