Widespread and abundant in Montana, partcularly in the western half of the state.
General Description
Stems ascending, 5–15 cm with glabrous foliage. Basal leaf blades 1–3 cm long, narrowly elliptic to ovate with entire or lobed margins. Stem leaves deeply lobed. Flowers with petals 6–20 mm long, twice as long as the glabrous sepals. Achenes short-hairy, 1–2 mm long with a straight (curved) beak 0.5–1 mm long; heads hemispheric, 5–10 mm high (

Our plants are variety
glaberrimus or
ellipticus Greene.
Phenology
One of our earliest blooming wildflowers, typically blooming in March and April but sometimes as early as February.
