Known in Montana from a 1941 Collection by W. E. Booth near Fromberg.
General Description
Tufted, grass-like annual with fibrous roots and slender stems that are up to 10 cm tall. The few, narrow leaves are borne near the base. Flowers are borne in 1-3 egg-shaped, pine cone-like sessile inflorescences, or spikes, that are subtended by 2-3 green, leaf-like bracts. One bract is held nearly erect and appears to be a continuation of the stem. Each spike is composed of numerous, spirally arranged, pointed scales. Each of these outer scales subtends a smaller, membranous inner scale, an ovary, and a single stamen. The fruit is a flattened, egg-shaped achene that is smaller than the inner scale.

Previous reports of hemicarpha drummondii for Montana are based on this species.
