Reported in western Montana by Hermann. No verified collections are known though suitable habitat would appear to exist in Montana.
 
General Description
Culms few from slender rhizomes, 15-25 cm tall. Leaves mostly basal, blades 0.5-0.8 mm wide, channeled or nearly terete. Spike solitary, androgynous, mostly 0.5-1 cm long, 3-5 mm wide, erect. Scales brownish or tinged with purple, the pistillate ones almost half as long as the perigynia and quickly deciduous; perigynia subulate or linear-lanceolate with the rachilla conspicuously exserted from the orifice, 3-5 mm long including the rachilla, ca 1 mm wide at the base, strongly spreading, soon deflexed and deciduous; stigmas 3; achenes elongate, nearly cylindric or obtusely trigonous (adapted from Welsh et al., 1993, A Utah Flora, 2nd ed.).

Range Comments
AK to Greenland south to NY and down Rocky Mountains (MT, WY, UT, CO) to northern NM (Kartesz in prep. 2012).
