General Description
Rhizomatous. Stems erect, 8–30 cm, tufted. Leaves basal and cauline; blades 1–4 mm wide. Inflorescence of 2 to 3 well-separated sessile spikes; the lowest bract shorter than the inflorescence. Spikes unisexual; the uppermost male, linear, 5–20 mm long; the lower female, ascending, 5–12 mm long, ovoid. Perigynia ascending, greenish, obovoid, short-stalked, pilose, 3–4 mm; the bidentate beak 0.5–1 mm long; stigmas 3. Female scales ovate, awned, tan to brown with a green midstripe and hyaline margins, not completely concealing the perigynia. Achene 3-sided, filling the perigynium (Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).

Montana plants are variety heliophila (Mack.) Crins.
