		General Description
		Trees up to 20 meters tall; branches ascending in upper half of trunk.  Branchlets orange-brown turning gray by the third year, glabrous to thinly pubescent. Petioles round in cross-section, mostly 1-2.5 cm long. Leaves mostly 5-9 cm long, 1.5-3.5 cm wide, lanceolate to narrowly ovate, glabrous, minutely crenate-serrate, apex acute. Catkins lose, 2.5-10 cm long, rachis hairy. Floral disks 1-2 mm wide. Staminate flowers with 15-25 stamens; pistillate flowers with broad, compact stigmas.  Capsules 2-valved, 4-5.5 mm long, broadly ovoid to orbiculoid (adapted from: Larson, 1986, Flora of the Great Plains).
