State Rank Reason (see State Rank above)
Papaver argemone is not documented in Montana (MTNHP Status Review 2026). It was included in the Manual of Montana Vascular Plants (Lesica et al. 2022) based on a specimens collected in Ravalli County in 1974 and deposited at the University of Montana Herbarium (MONTU 75532 ). However, the original identification was incorrect and in 2026 was annotated to Papaver dubium by botanist Scott Mincemoyer. A conservation status rank is not applicable (SNA) because this forb is not known to occur in Montana.

NOTE: Potential specimens should be sent to a State herbaria (University of Montana, Montana State University, or Montana State University-Billings) for verification. Herbarium specimens allow identifications to be confirmed, provide a central location for educating and information sharing, are a source for genetic, morphological, and ecological research, and are the basis on which Montana's floras are written.
