Papaver argemone is not documented in Montana (MTNHP Status Review 2026). It was included in the
Manual of Montana Vascular Plants (Lesica et al. 2022) based on a specimens collected in Ravalli County in 1974 and deposited at the University of Montana Herbarium (
MONTU 75532 ). However, the original identification was incorrect and in 2026 was annotated to
Papaver dubium by botanist Scott Mincemoyer. A conservation status rank is not applicable (SNA) because this forb is not known to occur in Montana.
NOTE: Potential specimens should be sent to a State herbaria (
University of Montana,
Montana State University, or
Montana State University-Billings) for verification. Herbarium specimens allow identifications to be confirmed, provide a central location for educating and information sharing, are a source for genetic, morphological, and ecological research, and are the basis on which Montana's floras are written.
