Iliamna rivularis occurs sporadically across western and central Montana where it may be common to locally abundant in suitable habitat. It can be found alongs streams, roadsides, and open forest but it is most abundant in recently burned forests. It thrives for a few years following fire and the seeds remain viable for long timeperiods. Long-term population trends are unknown and the species may have increased in abundance in recent decades with increases in wildfire frequency. No significant and widespread threats to the species are known and population levels appear to be robust, such that its viability in the state is not a concern.
General Description
Sparsely puberulent perennial. Stems erect, 50–200 cm. Leaves 5–20 cm wide, maple-like with 5 to 7 crenate lobes. Flowers pedicillate, 1 to several in upper leaf axils and a terminal panicle; sepals 3–5 mm long, the bracteoles linear; petals 15–25 mm long, pink to rose.
