General Description
Glabrous, evergreen shrub. Stems prostrate to ascending, 20–60 cm. Leaves short-petiolate, opposite; blades shiny, deep green, narrowly elliptic to obovate, serrulate, 1–4 cm long; stipules minute. Inflorescence few-flowered axillary cymes. Flowers perfect, 4-merous; sepals ca. 1 mm long; petals maroon, elliptic, 1–2 mm long; stamens 4. Fruit a dry, ovoid capsule, 3–6 mm long; seeds 1 or 2 enclosed in a white aril (Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).
