The Mississippi Kite breeds in the southeastern U.S. north along the Mississippi River valley to southern Illinois and west to northern Texas and the southern Great Plains (Parker 1999, Sibley 2014). This species is accidental in Montana (Montana Bird Distribution Committee 2012).
