The Surf Scoter breeds along shallow lakes from Alaska to Labrador and winters along the Pacific coast from Alaska to Mexico, the Atlantic coast from New Brunswick to Florida, and the Gulf Coast. The species is an uncommon migrant to Montana with fewer than nine observations reported in a typical year (Anderson et al. 2015, MTNHP 2019).
For a comprehensive review of the conservation status, habitat use, and ecology of this and other Montana bird species, please see

Direct Evidence of Breeding
Indirect Evidence of Breeding
Young birds may be responsible for most Montana records (Johnsgard 1986).
Surf Scoters are most likely to be encountered on large lakes and reservoirs during migration (Johnsgard 1986).
