General Description
The Surf Scoter breeds along shallow lakes from Alaska to Labrador and winters along the Pacific coast from Alaska to Mexico, the Atlantic coast from New Brunswick to Florida, and the Gulf Coast. The species is an uncommon migrant to Montana with fewer than nine observations reported in a typical year (Anderson et al. 2015, MTNHP 2019).

Migration
Young birds may be responsible for most Montana records (Johnsgard 1986).

Habitat
Surf Scoters are most likely to be encountered on large lakes and reservoirs during migration (Johnsgard 1986).
