General Description
Caespitose. Stems erect, 7–20 cm. Leaves basal and lower-cauline; blades 2–3 mm wide. Inflorescence of (1)2 to 4 sessile spikes forming a tight globose cluster; lowest bract inconspicuous. Spikes 7–10 mm long, bisexual, all similar; male flowers basal. Perigynia ascending, white to green, purple above, papillose, 3–4 × ca. 1.5 mm with a serrulate beak 0.8–1 mm long; stigmas 3. Female scales blackish, ca. as long and wide as the perigynia. Achene 3-sided, smaller than the perigynium (Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).
