The following combination of characters (Ball and Reznicek, 2003, Fl. North America, Vol. 23) present on var. dives should separate it from var. aquatilis: Spikes pendent or the terminal erect; proximal peduncle to 11 cm; perigynia ellipsoid; beak purple-brown, 0.3–0.4 mm; culms scabrous on angles.
AK, BC, and MT south to CA (Kartesz 2009).
Marshes and shallow waters or shorelines; 0–900 m.
