Variety hylophilus can be distinguished from the other varieties by the following combination of characters: Hairs of foliage and flowers all simple (basifixed), hairs stiff and not twisted, leaflets glabrous or nearly so on upper surface, stems longer than 15 cm , keels 8-10 mm long.
A regional endemic of MT (most widespread), ID, and WY, with historical records from western SD (Kartesz 2009).
