The White-headed Woodpecker is a year-round resident of pine forests of the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia south into eastern Washington, west-central Idaho, and northeastern, central, and south-central Oregon, south through the Coast Range of California and western slope of the Sierra Nevada (Garrett et al. 1996). In Montana, this species has several historic records but none in the past 10 years (Montana Bird Distribution Committee 2012).
For a comprehensive review of the conservation status, habitat use, and ecology of this and other Montana bird species, please see Marks et al. 2016, Birds of Montana.
