Diagnostic Characteristics
Variety occidentalis differs from the typical variety by the following combination of characters: Middle lobe of lip distinctly expanded, ratio of widths of dilated part to base of middle lobe more than 1.5; floral bracts averaging 1–2.8 mm (Magrath and Freudenstein, 2003, Fl. North America Vol. 26).

Range Comments
Widespread but irregular across much of Canada and the USA (Kartesz 2009).
