General Description
Shrubs 2–6 m. Twigs red-brown to yellow, mostly glabrous. Leaf blades thin, 2–10 cm long, lanceolate to elliptic with entire or toothed margins, glabrous or nearly so, glaucous beneath. Female catkins emerge with the leaves, 2–6 cm long, sessile or on leafy branchlets 2–15 mm long; scales dark brown, glabrous or with an apical fringe of hair. Capsules glabrous, 3–6 mm long; stipes 2–4 mm long; style 0.5–1 mm long (Lesica 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).
