General Description
Deciduous shrubs. Stems densely spiny, 1–2 m, usually unbranched. Herbage villous with spines along the leaf veins and petioles. Leaf blades orbicular, cordate, 10–30 cm wide with 5 to 9 acuminate, dentate lobes. Inflorescence dense umbels in a raceme 8–20 cm long. Flowers greenish; sepals minute; petals 2–3 mm long; stamens 5. Drupes red, 4–6 mm wide (Lesica et al. 2012. Manual of Montana Vascular Plants. BRIT Press. Fort Worth, TX).

Diagnostic Characteristics
This is the only North American Oplopanax species.

Range Comments
Oplopanax horridus is concentrated in the Pacific Northwest, western Canada, and Alaska. It also occurs disjunctly in Michigan and Ontario, where it is considered rare.
