Saint Anthony Dune Tiger Beetle - Cicindela arenicola
State Rank Reason (see State Rank above)
Species is ranked S1S2 as a result of its global rarity and recently detected occupancy of isolated suitable habitat in the Centennial Sandhills of southwest Montana.
General Description
Length 11-13 mm. Coppery red to greenish red in center of elytra and on two transverse marks projecting out onto elytra over a general cream background (Pearson et al. 2006).
Species Range
Montana Range
Range Descriptions
Native
Range Comments
First described by Rumpp (1967) from a small population at the St. Anthony Dunes in eastern Idaho. Further surveys located the species in eight counties in southeastern Idaho within the Snake River Plain. Surveys in 2008-09 by Ross Winton at Montana State University identified one apparently viable population in the Centennial Sandhills north of Red Rock Lakes NWR (Winton et al. 2010). Genetic analysis confirms that this population is best regarded as the St. Anthony Dunes Tiger Beetle (Goldberg et al. 2012).

Habitat
Occupied habitat is dominated by sagebrush with partially stabilized soils with beetles preferring the open loose sand associated with the peak of sandhills and avoiding more stabilized soils (Winton et al. 2010).
Management
Over collecting, high intensity grazing, off-road vehicle impacts, and weed encroachment (e.g., Cheatgrass) are all recognized as potential management concerns.
