Diagnostic Characteristics
The following characters diagnose variety montanus: Sepals faintly 3-veined, scarious margins narrow; heads of achenes 11-26 mm; outer face of achene narrowly rhombic (Whittemore, 1997, Fl. North America, Vol. 3).

Range Comments
WA, AB, SK, and ND south to CA and NM (Kartesz 2009).

Habitat
Wet meadows, vernal pools and sloughs, bogs, muddy shores of lakes and streams; 1500-2900 m (Whittemore 1997).
